OUR TRAINING

With a special emphasis on injuries and illness common in caving, our courses focus on basic assessment and treatment skills where emergency assistance may not be readily available. Our certifications build on the concepts of basic first aid and apply it to settings where environmental factors (such as heat or cold) can complicate treatment, extended patient times may be required, and where improvisation is necessary due to limited resources.

All our wilderness courses are taught to meet or exceed Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WMEC) standards with a caving-specific focus and require Adult CPR/AED as a prerequisite (or included at the beginning of the course). All WFA and WAFA courses will include Stop The Bleed training and certification. Southeast Expedition Medical is an American Red Cross Licensed Training Provider (LTP).

WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL

OUTDOOR SKILLS practice & scenarios

Sitting in a classroom all day doesn't help anyone learn. We select our venue locations to allow us to move quickly and often between lecture and hands-on outdoor learning. Skills are tailored to caving injury and illness, and scenarios come straight from real life stories. You never have to ask "but what would I do in real life?" - our scenarios are real life.

Cave RESCUE BASED APPROACH & FRAMEWORK

Courses will include discussion and perspective on how WFA or WAFA impacts a cave rescue. Lectures and scenarios will focus heavily on evacuation decisions (Stay, Go, or Go Fast), patient movement decisions, and how to document extended patient time in a way that can be easily understood by responders.

quality volunteer instructors

All of our instructors are cavers (certified in Wilderness First Responder and up) that donate their time for free to make our courses accessible and affordable to the caving community.

Our mission is to have at least one WFA on every cave trip.
Cavers rescue cavers.
Cavers train cavers.

SO MUCH great information and so many skills that are great for anyone who goes on high risk adventures. Highly recommended!
